This video essay looks at one of the most important films of the Hong Kong New Wave, Ann Hui’s BOAT PEOPLE, and how it formally combines the director’s interest in the political and the melodramatic. The essay was written by Christopher Heron, edited by Brian Robertson, and narrated by David J Phillips. Special thanks to our friends for help in releasing Issue #24: Matt Porterfield, Hannah Gross, Deragh Campbell, Tracy Droz Tragos, Andrew Droz Palermo, Jennifer Chan, Nina Fotias, Aidan Cowling, and the staff of Voodoo Child.
